CORRADO GIAQUINTO

by Gaetano Mongelli

Corrado Giaquinto was born in Molfetta on 8 February 1703.  The fifth of eight children, he left his hometown at a very young age to move to Naples, where his qualities as a draughtsman and painter were put to good use in the already renowned workshops of Nicola Maria Rossi and Maestro Francesco Solimena. As soon as he was 24, he opened his own art workshop in Rome. He painted for the most powerful courts in Europe, in particular the Spanish court, being the spokesman of an 'Escuela mista' that reconciled Neapolitan figurative culture with that of the Roman school. A leading exponent of Rococo, he was one of the protagonists of 18th century European painting and one of the most acclaimed artists of his time. His works adorned churches, palaces and museums, from Naples to Turin, from Rome to Cesena, from London to Paris, from the USA to Ireland and Argentina. Prof. Gaetano Mongelli, art historian and profound connoisseur of the Molfettese painter's life and works, has collected Giaquinto's most representative works (already in the Bonasia Collection), in a catalogue rich in documented images, to underline the painter's compositional greatness.   Volume size closed 20x26 cm (open format 40x26 cm) from number 104 pages, colour, paperback stitched binding.
